The lawmakers (House of Representatives) whose decision is to enhance coral
production of fish however wants the ban to be pleasant in phases so as not to
disrupt supply from previous fish orders into the country
It is estimated that Nigeria’s total annual fish
demand stands at about 2.7 million metric tonnes with local production
contributing only 800, 000 metric tonnes, leaving the nation to rely heavily on
importation to meet the deficit of about 1.9 million metric tones.
The house of representatives wants government to
create an enabling environment in the fisheries sub-sector by ensuring
restriction on fish and fish products imports.
