Former Nigeria World Cup coach Lars Lagerback has warned that
Iceland have one of the best players in the world in Everton midfielder Gylfi
Sigurdsson and he could wreck any team.
Lagerback was in charge of the Super Eagles at the 2010 World Cup
and handled Iceland at last year’s Euros in France.
Shock troopers Iceland have been drawn in Group D of Russia along
with Nigeria, Argentina and Croatia and Lagerback their player to watch is
Sigurdsson because he plays for the whole team.
He is blessed with a great vision, packs a shot and he is a free
kick specialist.
“Together with Henrik Larsson, I would say that Gylfi is the best
team player I’ve worked with,” Lagerback said of the man Everton paid £45
million for.
“He always plays for the team and must be one of the best two-way
midfield players out there.”
Sigurdsson himself said Iceland’s biggest asset is the team
spirit.
“It has a lot to do with the team spirit that we have,” he said
when asked what is his team’s secret. “How we are as a group is unique.”
Nigeria will battle Iceland on June 22 in Volgograd.
